Abstract
This study aims to determine whether the interactive approach is more effective than the bottom-up approach in improving the reading ability of the tenth grade students of MA Bidayatul Hidayah in the 2020/2021 academic year. This research is a quasi-experimental research. There were two groups in the study which were selected using purposive sampling, namely the control group and the experimental group. The subjects of this study were students of class X 5 as the experimental group consisting of 27 students and students of X 7 as the control group which also consisted of 27 students. Data was collected by conducting pre-test and post-test to students as the subjects of this study. Therefore, the instruments of this research are pre-test and post-test instruments. The data were analyzed quantitatively using descriptive analysis and inferential analysis including normality test which was carried out by the Klomogorov – Smirnov formula, homogeneity test which was carried out by the F-test formula, and hypothesis testing which was performed using the t-test formula in the SPSS 17 program. The results showed that the use of an interactive reading approach was effective in improving students' reading comprehension skills. This can be seen through the research hypothesis test. The hypothesis that “there is a significant difference in students' reading ability between students taught using an interactive reading approach and students taught using a bottom-up approach” is accepted.
