Abstract

The purpose of this research is (1) to find the results of students' speaking ability before being taught using public speaking strategy, (2) to find results of students' speaking ability after being taught using public speaking strategy, (3) to find the effectiveness of public speaking strategy in speaking ability in eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Sawahan in the academic year of 2020/2021. This type of research is Pre-experimental with one group pre-test post-test. This research was conducted at SMP N 1 Sawahan in the academic year of 2020/2021, the population of the whole class VIII – B consist of 219 students, while the sample used by the researcher was class VIII – B which consisted of 32 students. The sampling technique used purposive sampling. Collecting data using pre-test and post-test. the technique of data analysis used to analyze the data in this research is statistical analysis data ttest. Based on the results of the research showed that the mean score between the pre-test and post-test was different.The value of students' speaking ability before being taught using public speaking strategy was 59,2 and after being taught using public speaking strategy was 80,625. This is indicated by the result of tcount was 18.1 which is greater than ttable is 1.696. The used of public speaking strategy will not significant if tcount< ttable. Data analysis shows that tcount> ttable which is 18,1 > 1,696, so Ho is rejected. The used of public speaking strategy will significant if tcount> ttable. Data analysis shows that tcount> ttable , so Ha is accepted. Based on the results above, that Null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and Alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. Thus, it can be said that the public speaking strategy is effectively used in learning to improve the speaking ability of class VIII – B students of SMP N 1 Sawahan in the academic year of 2020/2021.
