Abstract

Reading is the most valuable activity that has many benefits. By reading, it will open up many opportunities to move forward and see the wider world from various perspectives. However, not only reading but also being able to comprehensing the content is the most important thing. Reading comprehension is often a difficult thing for some students. Herringbone is an effective reading skill strategy that can help students for reading achievement. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of using the Herringbone strategy on students' reading achievement, especially in recount texts. The sample in this study were tenth graders at SMK Tamansiswa, X TKI-1 as the experimental class and X TKI-2 as the control class. The number of students in each class is 31 students. The method used in this research is a quantitative method. In addition, the research design used a quasi-experimental using post-test scores from the experimental and control classes. The data in the study were in the form of post- test scores from each sample that had previously been given treatments. Through the assessment of the post-test average results of the two classes, it was found for the experimental class 82.09 and 77.80 for the control class. The result of data which calculated on t-test showed t-value was 2,68 and then t-table was 1,67 with significance level of 0.05. From the data result, it showen if t-value 2,68 was higher than t-table 1,67. Thus, it can be concluded that there was a significant difference in use of the strategy. Herringbone strategy is an effective strategy to help students achieve reading achievement.
